Blocking it out
This is where I begin - in the work room looking at the drawings I have in front of me and working out how best to make those initial sketches a three dimensional reality.
Let me introduce my hat blocks. I have a few pieces that I have collected over the years, some found in second hand shops, some found online and a few very treasured blocks gifted to me by one of my beautiful mentors. They all have a story. I've been fortunate enough to have met many of the milliners who have been selling on their blocks or I've come to know some of the history of a block by looking at the pin marks and makers stamps. They have all been cared for by their previous owner and I hope I've been good to mine - time will tell.
I use my blocks as the foundation of my making.
